Kuumba Academy is proud to announce its partnership with AmeriCorps Delaware for the 2017/18 school year.  AmeriCorps Delaware will be providing 16 AmeriCorps Student Enrichment Specialists, who will provide support to classrooms in the 1st through 4th grades.  The Student Enrichment Specialists will be improving academic and behavioral outcomes for students in Tier II across grades 1-4 by providing targeted daily intervention and support.

Each Americorps member, or Student Enrichment Specialist, will add value to Kuumba Academy through the following means:

Outcomes

Kuumba expects several impactful outcomes for each intervention.

A. An increase in the amount of daily RTI time for Tier II students will allow Tier II students to move up to Tier I.  Using a standards-based pre and post test, Kuumba anticipates that at least 70% of Tier II students’ performance will increase by 40 percentage points in literacy and/or math.

B. A decrease in the student to teacher ratio is expected to allow both the AmeriCorps SES and the teacher to better meet the individual social emotional needs of their students, amounting to a more productive classroom and fewer disruptive behaviors.  Kuumba expects to see a reduction in the amount of student referred to special education after 18 weeks of tiered interventions

C. A decrease in the student to teacher ratio is also expected to allow students better access to the rigorous curriculum by being more able to address every student's individual needs and learning styles.  Kuumba expects that 80% of students will demonstrate 10 months growth as measured by map in reading and math.  80% of students will demonstrate a more positive growth mindset towards math as measured through survey data.

D.  The focus of daily crew is expected to help students forge positive relationships with another adult in the building, while teaching them critical skills for success including literacy, conflict resolution, organizational skills and the school’s adopted Habits of Scholarship.  Kuumba expects 90% of students to have forged a positive relationship with at least one adult in the building by the end of the year.

The AmeriCorps Student Enrichment Specialists will work with Kuumba to achieve the following goals:

7:30-8:00  Support students during breakfast.  Positive check-ins, friendly greeting, words of encouragement

8:00-9:00  Supporting students during Whole Group ELA and independent practice.

9:00-9:45  Provide targeted reading intervention using guided reading lesson plan for Tier II students

9:45-10:30  Supporting students during Whole Group ELA and independent practice

10:30-11:30  Support students through lunch.  Model positive social interactions, hold social skills/lunch bunch meetings with targeted students

11:30-12:00  Professional Learning: Data meeting and planning time with lead teacher

12:00-12:30  Personal lunch for AmeriCorps members

12:30-1:30  Provide targeted math intervention based on Eureka Math curriculum for Tier II students (group 1)

1:30 -2:00  Provide targeted math intervention based on Eureka Math curriculum for Tier II students (group 2)

2:00-2:30  Facilitate Crew in collaboration with lead teacher

2:30-3:00  Check-ins with targeted students for social emotional wellness check

3:00-3:30  Support students with safe dismissal

3:30-4:30  Data tracking, lesson prep and parent contact
